  1. $1,200 ACCESS: The Fund for Peace, Washington, DC
    Discretionary grant to research and prepare an article on teaching about international conflict and peace with special emphasis on peace building in Bosnia to be published in Social Education. To include lesson plans and teaching strategies.
  2. $5,000 American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education (AACTE), Washington, DC
    Two part grant: (1) $3,000 for a workshop to continue support of dissemination of book Preparing Teachers to Teach Global Perspectives: A Handbook for Teacher Educators and (2) $2,000 to develop companion piece for book with emphasis on elementary education.
  3. $3,000 American Association of School Administrators (AASA), Arlington, VA
    Two-part proposal: (1) $1,500 to convene second meeting of a Task Force on International Relationships with Longview funding limited to support encouragement of global perspectives in American education (2) $1,500 for speaker on global/international education issues at 1998 AASA National Conference.

    Two part grant: (1) $1,000 to support building a national coalition through leading educational organizations; (2) $4,000 to revise and update existing American Forum curriculum units and put them on their web site for dissemination. Also, seek out or develop resource materials with focus on conflict resolution, international organizations, particularly the U.N. and the global environment to put on Internet site.

    Discretionary grant to support dissemination activities of the AACTE publication Preparing Teachers to Teach Global Perspectives: A Handbook for Teacher Educators at the ATE annual meeting in February, 1997.
  6. $4,500 Association of Teacher Educators, Reston, VA
    Two-part grant: (1) $1,000 of grant to hold a planning meeting to design a teacher education workshop, gather materials, technology sources, and model curricula; (2) $3,500 for one-day pre-conference workshop at 1998 annual meeting with emphasis on elementary level plus additional program during same conference. Will use AACTE handbook.
  7. $3,400 Brown University, Choices Program, Providence, RI
    Grant is to include middle school teachers in 1997 Choices Summer Institute for Senior Associates. Teachers will receive leadership training on Choices methodology and school reform movement; will adapt Choices material to middle school level or build on an interdisciplinary approach; develop dissemination plan for 1997-1998 school year.   9. $7,600 Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), Washington, DC
    Three part grant: (1) $1,000 to support meetings in Washington for leaders of national educational leadership groups; (2) $5,600 to co-fund with the Stanley Foundation the third biennial award to the state department of education judged to have progressed the most in encouraging global education; (3) $1,000 toward the CCSSO assessment consortium in social studies to ensure that global/international education focus is included.
  10. $3,300 Indiana University, ERIC, Social Studies Development Center, Bloomington, IN
    Multi-year project to create an Adjunct Clearinghouse for Global Education within the ERIC system beginning with three ERIC Digests on (1) Internet Resources on Global International Education; (2) Civic Values in a Global Age; and (3) International Perspectives in Peace Education.
  11. $10,000 Institute for Educational Inquiry, Seattle, WA
    First year of a 3-year commitment to school reform project to determine essential content and pedagogy required for teachers to develop democratic character in students. This will be part of the National Network for Education Review.
  12. $1,500 Massachusetts Global Education Program, Winchester, MA
    For project to involve grades 4-8 students' families in world affairs project--$1,000 for local teacher coordinator honoraria and $500 toward world map purchase.
  13. $10,000 National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), Alexandria, VA
    To fund 16th year of mini-grant program for NAESP member schools with exemplary projects in the field of global/international education.
  14. $5,000 National Catholic Educational Association, Washington, DC
    For second year of a mini-grant program in NCEA elementary schools with seed money for projects directly related to helping students develop global perspectives.
  15. $1,000 National Center for History in the Schools, Los Angeles, CA
    Support to develop, print and disseminate world history teaching unit on Modern Asia (high school level); Living in the Shadow of the Wall: the Rise and Fall of the Berlin Wall (middle school level); or A Study of Apartheid in South Africa (upper middle and high school level.)
  16. $4,000 National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), Silver Spring, MD
    Two-part grant: (1) $2,000 toward planning for development of videos on teaching social studies, demonstrating how to incorporate NCSS-developed standards into K-12. In cooperation with WGBH, Boston PBS; (2) $2,000 to begin mini-grant project with NCSS affiliates for outstanding projects for global education.
  17. $4,000 National Peace Corps Association, Washington, DC
    For eight elementary teacher awards for exemplary global education curricula dealing with four possible themes: global interdependence, diversity, conflict management, and cross-cultural patterns. Winning materials will be placed on Global TeachNet, an interactive nationwide network. Knight Foundation will provide matching grant. (Teachers and Schools Grant) More
  18. $3,000 Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA
    To support teacher education in global perspectives for in-service teachers with a summer workshop and on-going support through the school year. This project involved school reform in an urban schools/university partnership.
  19. $3,600 SPICE-Stanford University, Stanford, CA
    For final development, publishing and dissemination of curriculum unit Who Should Control Nuclear Technology? Pedagogy for unit formulates open-ended questions for students to investigate multiple perspectives on the issue and draw conclusions. One sample lesson available free on SPICE Web site.
  20. $500 University of Cincinnati School of Education, Cincinnati, OH
    Honoraria for consultant and workshop leader for Human Rights Education Clinic for teachers.
  21. $1,000 World Affairs Council of Washington, DC, Washington, DC
    To be used for 1997 Summer Institute for Teachers with an emphasis on recruiting elementary teachers.
