Indiana2009International Education initiatives in 2009 – 2010 made possible through the support of foundation and corporate partners include the development, publication and distribution to all Indiana schools of “Indiana Education Goes Global”, a guide to international education for Indiana schools. It will soon be available on-line. K-12 Chinese language programs state wide increased from 8 (2005) to over 40 (2008) to include programs at the elementary, middle school and high school. Principal Exchanges with Taiwan are resulting in school to school partnerships. Global Indiana, a Consortium for International Education, is developing school-to-school partnerships with schools in Liaoning and Zhejiang provinces in the People’s Republic of China in collaboration with the China Exchange Initiative and the Indiana Association of School Principals. Indiana is one of five states participating in a Local Action Network advocacy project in collaboration with the Council on Standards for International Educational Travel and the US Department of State to promote outbound and inbound international student exchange. Indiana’s Academic Standards for Heritage Language Learners are being finalized. The international education specialist is collaborating with 21st Century Community Learning Centers staff and Indiana Afterschool Network to disseminate information and resources to build global literacy in afterschool programs.
