NebraskaNebraska International Education Website: http://www.education.ne.gov/forlg/IE_Main.htm The Going Global Project addresses the challenges of preparing Nebraska students and citizens to be workers and leaders in the interconnected world of the twenty-first century. The Nebraska Department of Education and the Malaika Foundation along with their partners are creating a support system to expand the international knowledge and skills of Nebraska students. We continue building on the foundation, which was initiated in 2008 with a survey of PreK-12 educators and an International Education Summit attended by participants from education and government. In 2009, the Nebraska Council of International Education prepared an action plan for the Going Global Project to address the following goals: • Empower people in the state of the Nebraska to interact in the global community. In order to build a rationale why global education is important to citizens, resources and materials have been developed and made available to the general public on the International Education Advocacy website: http://www.nde.state.ne.us/FORLG/IEAdvocacyMain.html • Present workshops at regional Educational Service Units to provide teachers with the resources to integrate international education into any subject area. Workshops were also presented for after-school programs. Workshop resources available on the international education website: http://www.nde.state.ne.us/FORLG/IE_Main.htm • Develop model lessons for teachers in any K-12 subject area. There are currently thirty-one international education learning scenarios available on the international education website: http://www.nde.state.ne.us/FORLG/IEThematicUnitsMain.html The Nebraska Department of Education will continue to develop the template for teachers to submit lesson plans that can be used in specific subject areas at various K-12 levels. NDE has also developed an International Culture Center using the virtual reality environment in Second Life that offers users a unique venue to experience cultures and languages from around the world. • Identify and provide implementation resources to support international education. Resources have been developed and are available at: http://www.nde.state.ne.us/FORLG/IE_Main.htm • Build partnerships among stakeholders, including PreK-16 educators, after-school and summer programs, businesses, government entities, and community-based organizations to enhance the continuing progress of international education development in Nebraska. Representatives from each of these stakeholder groups agreed to videotape international education advocacy messages available at: http://www.nde.state.ne.us/FORLG/IEAdvocacyMain.html • Currently developing a Nebraska Global Competence Policy Statement for approval by the State Board of Education.
