KentuckyKentucky has been a part of the States Network since 2002 through various initiatives, including a statewide International Education Summit convened by the Kentucky Department of Education in 2003. Since early 2009, the Kentucky Association of School Administrators (KASA) has been working with the Kentucky Department of Education to mobilize its 3,000 members in an effort to collaboratively prepare school administrators to lead schools and districts with an intentional exertion to make global connections. 2009-2010 Initiatives Include: • Collaboration between the Kentucky Department of Education and the University of Kentucky College of Education on a P20 Global Portals Innovation Lab with two projects: Proficiency Assessment in Chinese and Early Childhood partnership with Ecuador • Kentucky Department of Education’s participation in international benchmarking of world language scales at the ACTFL- CEFR Alignment meetings in Leipzig, Germany • New Confucius Institutes opened at Western Kentucky University and the University of Kentucky. • A Chinese Flagship program created at Western Kentucky University in collaboration with Oregon State University Flagship • Jules Verne program of the French Ministry of Education begun at Frankfort Independent High School. • Collaborative partnership began among the University of Kentucky, Kentucky Department of Education, and the Académie de Grenoble to do research on student motivation and promote school partnerships • Two new Spanish Immersion programs are beginning in 2010; schools in an existing immersion program were named International Spanish Academy schools. • Civitas delegation from Morocco and a Technology in the Classroom delegation from North Africa and the Middle East hosted by the Kentucky Department of Education. • Utilization of a virtual Community of Partners site to share work on citizenship and democracy with 20 schools in Kentucky and Morocco • Kentucky joined the 21st Century Schools Partnership • Adoption of common core standards in English/Language Arts and Math • Pilot projects underway around Board Examinations and Early/Middle College • New assessment and accountability system under SB 1 • Participation in the NMSI Advance Kentucky grant to increase enrollment and diversity in AP courses • Five schools’ participation in the Gates/Prichard grant around professional development focused on rigorous math instructional strategies Contact Information: Rhonda Caldwell Rhonda@kasa.org; Jacque Van Houten Jacqueline.vanhouten@education.ky.gov Lu Young Lu.young@jessamine.kyschools.us; Dan Imes Dan.imes@carter.kyschools.us Updated September 2011 |
