University of Maryland College of Education

The GATE (Global Awareness in Teacher Education) Fellow Program combines faculty development, organizational development, and program development activities to enhance internationalization of the University of Maryland College of Education and its teacher education programs. The College decided to create a model that could contribute to this major goal on several levels and that provide an enduring foundation for continuous improvement of the global dimensions of teacher education programs.

The GATE Fellows are faculty members from diverse disciplines and teacher education concentrations. The come together as, a professional community dedicated to strengthening the internationalization of the College’s teacher education programs. The Fellows meet in a bi-weekly seminar to study models of international teacher education, and discuss ways to work together and individually to enhance this field. By forming a cohort of faculty who can advocate for this organizational goal as well as transform their own courses to reflect international and global perspectives, they strengthen each other as well as the College. In addition, each Fellow develops an individual project and creates new components of existing courses or design new courses with global themes.

The program provides meaningful curriculum development while empowering a cohort of faculty who will continue to be advocates and change agents as the College of Education works to educate future teachers to be globally competent and dedicated to promoting a broad worldview for their students. The program concludes with a Statewide invitational colloquium designed to disseminate the results of the Fellows’ work, provide models for wider benefit around the state, and stimulate further collaboration among colleges and universities, state agencies, school systems, and other organizations. The program has inspired improvement in the College’s efforts to internationalize and to develop a viable core on which to build.
