University of San Diego, School of Leadership and Education SciencesDuring its 2006 strategic planning process, the School of Leadership and Education Sciences (SOLES) at the University of San Diego adopted, as one of it four goals to “develop highly effective, socially responsible, and marketable students through International Programs.” To achieve this goal SOLES is expanding opportunities for faculty to engage in international research projects, partnerships and/or professional development activities; internationalizing the curriculum across all programs; and has established a requirement for all entering students beginning fall ’08 to engage in an international experience prior to program completion. To support these objectives SOLES has provided support to the Global Center which creates opportunities for students to participate in long-term exchanges, global internships, global student teaching, and short term faculty led global study experiences. To sustain curricular reform, in 2008 the Department of Learning and Teaching began providing professional development for all teacher education credential faculty to assist them in integrating best teaching practices about global knowledge and perspectives into their courses to enable future teachers analyze their work, study, and beliefs regarding global education in the various education disciplines. SOLES is also increasing its partnerships with globally focused school sites to ensure that more students have the opportunity to engage in globally oriented field work during their preparation to become teachers. Video case studies, webinars, and on-line learning modules developed at these sites will provide “virtual field experiences” so all teacher candidates can observe and learn from practices in of globally focused classrooms. These experiences will diversify the range of practices and classroom settings from which future teachers learn as and connect them to theory and research discussed in their courses and readings.
