Teacher Preperation For The Global Age
Teacher Preparation for the Global Age

The Longview Foundation Releases Report on Internationalizing Pre-service Teacher Education.

Delaware

Delaware is one of six states in the “Tough Choices or Tough Times” consortium committed to overhauling public education to prepare students for a truly global workforce.  By doing so, the state will investigate international benchmarks for educating its students and workers to better guarantee a highly-skilled, globally competitive workforce.

Other key initiatives in International Education in the state of Delaware:

  •  The Delaware Department of Education now has a dedicated website for International Education:  http://www.doe.k12.de.us/infosuites/staff/IE/default.shtml.
  • DOE continues its partnership with the Peace Corps’ Coverdell World Wise Schools and iEARN to help internationalize the state’s recommended curriculum in all content areas.
  • The Delaware State Board of Education has passed a two-credit world language graduation requirement for students graduating in 2015.
  • The Department has Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with seven countries (China, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, and Trinidad and Tobago). These MOUs allow for school and classroom partnerships, shared teacher professional development experiences and teacher recruitment in languages and other content areas.  Recent activities have included principal exchanges with Creteil, France; an artist-in-residence program for an Italian sculptor in the Appoquinimink School District; and summer educator seminars in Voleterra and Ripatransone, Italy.  An Italian summer camp for students age 6-12 is scheduled for July 2009.
