The Longview Foundation Releases Report on Internationalizing Pre-service Teacher Education.

University of Vermont

The Asian Studies Outreach Program (ASOP) at the University of Vermont reached over 1,400 teachers and school administrators  and 13,000 students in 2009-1009 in all elementary and secondary public and schools in Vermont through programs such as: 

 

  •  Sino-American Seminar on Educational Leadership, in Lijiang, Yunnan Province
  •  Journey East Performing Arts Exchange of Windham Central, with Inner Mongolia University Performing Arts College; and 10th year celebration
  • Windham Southeast and Southwest districts Asian American Cultural Exchange, with Affiliated Experimental Secondary School of Yunnan Normal University
  • The Asian Institutes for teachers are conducted on a three-year rotating basis; one institute being held each summer (Thailand, China and Japan)
  • The Governor’s Institutes on Asian Cultures (on-campus program in June, travel to China in July of the following year)
  • Sponsorship of touring Exhibit of Chinese Children’s Art Work, the Photo Exhibit of Japan and China, and the Exhibit of Thai Children’s Arts
  • Hosting 17 visiting teachers from Asia
  • First statewide clearinghouse for international education
  • Work with State Department of Education to develop state guidelines on Asia

New initiatives include assisting school districts in accepting international students from Asia into public schools and establishing a teaching credential program for language instructors from China.
